چکیده

Introduction It is well known that the wear resistance of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) improves in proportion to the crosslinking irradiation dose. It is also well known that the mechanical properties and oxidative stability of UHMWPE are affected by the irradiation dose, resin type, and post-irradiation heat treatment, among others factors. Therefore, careful consideration of these variables should be made for a given application. This balance between wear resistance and mechanical properties is particularly important for applications in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) where the contact stresses are higher than in total hip arthroplasty (THA).

Sequentially Annealed Highly Cross-linked Polyethylene Reduced In Vivo Wear Particle Generation In TKA

Introduction: Polyethylene wear particles induce macrophages to release cytokines, which can lead to osteolysis and aseptic loosening of total joint prostheses. The generation of polyethylene wear particles is one of the most important factors that affect the midterm and long-term clinical results associated with total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Therefore, to achieve better long-term results for ...

Knee Simulator Wear of Cross-linked Uhmwpe with Normal and Mal-rotation Kinematics

Introduction: Wear of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is a major factor that affects longevity of the total joint replacement. In total hips (THR), cross-linking of polyethylene has been shown to be highly effective in reducing wear both clinically and experimentally [1-3]. Also, in TKR, Schmidig et al. [4] showed a 90% reduction of wear rate in 10 Mrad compared to 3 Mrad tibi...

Highly Cross-Linked Polyethylene in Total Hip and Knee Replacement: Spatial Distribution of Molecular Orientation and Shape Recovery Behavior

The present study investigated effects of processing procedures on morphology of highly cross-linked and re-melted UHMWPE (XLPE) in total hip and knee arthroplasty (THA, TKA). The shape recovery behavior was also monitored via uniaxial compression test at room temperature after non-destructive characterizations of the in-depth microstructure by confocal/polarized Raman spectroscopy. The goal of...

Investigating the Effect of Using Cross-Linked Polyethylene Waste as Fine Aggregate on Mechanical Properties of Hot Mix Asphalt

Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) is an appropriate insulating material for high-voltage cables which has been widely used as electrical cable coating. In this study, Crushed XLPE wastes with different volume percentages (25, 50, and 75%) were used in hot mix asphalt (HMA) as a substitute for fine aggregates remained on sieve no. 8 whose size varies from 1.18 to 2.36 mm. The dynamic stiffness (i...

Posterior Tibial Polyethylene Fracture in Cruciate-Retaining Total Knee Arthroplasty

Introduction One of the common prostheses for primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a cruciate-retaining (CR) design. The tibial polyethylene inserts commonly used in TKA are made of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). The CR TKA design retains the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), which is believed to provide increased stability, promote femoral roll back, improve propriocep...
